“IPTV” gets used online as a euphemism for pirate live-TV streaming boxes and subscriptions, and we’re not going to point you toward those — reselling cable channels without a license is illegal, the services get shut down constantly (taking your money with them), and plenty carry malware in their apps or set-top boxes. The good news is that Xbox One has a genuinely solid lineup of legal apps for both live TV and your own media library, and several of them are free.
Licensed live-TV streaming apps on Xbox One
These are official, licensed services with real content deals behind them — available directly from the Microsoft Store on your Xbox One:
- Sling TV — an Xbox One-native app (Sling even launched an Xbox-exclusive version early on) offering live channel packages without a cable contract.
- Hulu + Live TV — combines Hulu’s on-demand library with 90+ live channels, and if you’re on the Live TV plan it bundles Disney+ and ESPN+ at no extra cost.
- fuboTV — has a dedicated Xbox One app (fuboTV launched on Xbox One consoles directly), built around sports and live entertainment channels.
- YouTube — the YouTube app has been on Xbox One since launch and carries YouTube TV’s live channels for subscribers, alongside the regular YouTube catalog.
Not every live-TV service has made it to Xbox One specifically — Philo, for example, does not currently have an Xbox One app, so check before you subscribe expecting to watch on your console.
Free, ad-supported live channels
If you don’t want a subscription at all, several free legal apps are available on Xbox One:
- Pluto TV — free, ad-supported live channels and on-demand content, with a confirmed native Xbox One app.
- Tubi and The Roku Channel — free ad-supported on-demand libraries, both widely available on Xbox.
Streaming your own media library
If what you actually want is to watch your own movie, TV, and home-video collection on your Xbox One rather than live channel packages, two well-known tools handle that differently:
- Plex — has a native Xbox One app in the Microsoft Store, and can stream your personal media library (plus its own free ad-supported live channel bundle) directly to the console without a separate streaming box.
- Jellyfin — a free, open-source alternative to Plex for managing and streaming your own media, with built-in live-TV/DVR tuner support if you have an over-the-air antenna and tuner. Jellyfin doesn’t have an official Xbox Store app the way Plex does, so the practical route on Xbox is casting or browser access rather than a dedicated console app; if a native app matters to you, Plex is the more Xbox-friendly of the two.
Bottom line
For actual licensed live TV on Xbox One, Sling TV, Hulu + Live TV, and fuboTV are your subscription options, with Pluto TV as a solid free alternative. For your own media, Plex is the one built for Xbox specifically. Every pirate “IPTV” service advertised as a cheap alternative to these is operating without the rights to the channels it’s reselling — steer clear.
