Best Defense For War Dragons

Building a strong defense in War Dragons is about base layout and tower synergy more than any single trick, and a few principles come up again and again among experienced defenders.

Keep Your Base Short

Short-to-medium length bases consistently perform best defensively. A compact layout concentrates your strongest towers’ fire on attacking dragons faster, gives less runway for dragons to build rage before reaching your core, and makes it easier for your towers’ supershots to land on target.

Mix Your Tower Types

Don’t lean on one tower type. Spread Storm Towers, Ice Turrets, and Mage towers across your islands so attackers can’t build rage safely against a single damage type — at least one rage-draining tower (Ice or Storm) per island is a common baseline. Overusing any single tower type creates an easy counter for whichever dragon your attacker brings.

Shield Your Heaviest Hitters

Your hardest-hitting towers are the ones attackers will target first with instant-kill or burst abilities, so shielding matters. Careful placement of Ice Turrets and Storm Towers to cover each other, combined with shields on your key damage towers, meaningfully extends how long your base can keep fighting during an attack.

Use Defensive Riders on Your Perch

Defensive Riders sit passively atop your perched dragon and buff nearby towers and islands — equip one that covers your strongest cluster of towers for the biggest overall boost to base defense power.

Understand How Defense Power Is Calculated

Your total defense power factors in every tower on the base, along with research upgrades, runes, rider buffs, and any active monument bonuses. Investing research points into your defensive towers (not just offense) has a direct, compounding effect on how hard your base is to crack.

There’s no single “best” static layout — the strongest defenses adapt tower placement and rider choice to counter whatever dragons are currently dominant in your league, so keep an eye on what attackers are bringing and adjust accordingly.
