“TH8.5” is Clash of Clans community shorthand, not an official town hall level — it refers to a Town Hall 8 base that’s been pushed as far as it can go: maxed or near-maxed defenses, walls, and troops for the level, sometimes with a few Town Hall 9 upgrades unlocked and then intentionally held back so the account still matches into TH8 wars rather than TH9. Whatever the exact reason you’re building one, the base design principles are the same as any strong TH8 war base, and they matter more than any specific copy-link layout, since popular link bases get memorized and picked apart by opposing clans within days.
Core layout principles for a TH8 war base
Start with what you’re actually defending. At Town Hall 8 your key defensive buildings are the Town Hall itself, two Air Defenses, an X-Bow (if unlocked) or Mortar, Wizard Towers, Archer Towers, Cannons, and your Clan Castle troops. A strong anti-2-star base centers on protecting the Town Hall behind multiple defensive layers so a single successful raid can’t both destroy it and take half the base in one pass.
Compartmentalization over open funnels
Split the base into small walled compartments (4-6 buildings each) rather than one or two big open pockets. Compartmentalized bases force attacking troops to break through walls repeatedly, buying your defenses more time to fire and giving Clan Castle troops more chances to counter-attack roaming units like Giants or Hog Riders. Avoid a single wide-open funnel straight to the Town Hall — that’s exactly what a three-star GoWiPe or Hog attack is built to exploit.
Centralize the Town Hall and splash defenses
At TH8, centralizing the Town Hall behind your strongest defenses (Wizard Towers, Mortar, X-Bow) is still generally effective, unlike at higher town hall levels where compartment-based “anti-everything” designs dominate. Keep splash-damage buildings (Mortar, Wizard Towers) positioned so their radius overlaps the compartments attackers are most likely to funnel through, since splash damage is what actually wipes out mass Barbarian/Archer or Minion attacks.
Air defense placement
Spread your two Air Defenses to opposite sides or corners of the base rather than stacking them together. A common TH8 attack is a Balloon or Minion raid aimed at whichever side has weaker air coverage — if both Air Defenses sit next to each other, the other half of your base is defenseless against air.
Clan Castle and Dark Elixir placement
Place your Clan Castle centrally enough that its troops can reach and disrupt attackers no matter which side they enter from, but not so exposed that it can be lured out and killed before the main attack begins. If you’re farming Dark Elixir at TH8.5, keep the Dark Elixir Storage in an inner compartment — it’s a common target for a quick, low-cost raiding attack separate from full three-star war attempts.
Testing your base
Before committing a layout to war, use Friendly Challenges with clanmates to see which troop compositions get through cleanly. A base that looks strong on paper often has a walking path an attacker can exploit that isn’t obvious until someone actually runs troops through it.
Anti-2-star vs. anti-3-star design
An anti-2-star base accepts that attackers may get some percentage of destruction but tries to deny the Town Hall itself, which alone denies the second star. An anti-3-star (or “anti-everything”) base tries to minimize destruction percentage broadly so attackers can’t reach 50% even if they do take the Town Hall. At TH8, anti-2-star designs are usually more practical since TH8’s defensive tech isn’t yet dense enough to reliably hold destruction under 50% against a well-planned attack.
