Cloud is dangerous because of his disjointed sword range, strong aerials, and the Limit Break meter that supercharges his moves once it fills — but he has real weaknesses that the right counter-pick can exploit: he struggles against small, hard-to-hit characters, high-mobility fighters who dodge his pressure, and zoners who can keep him locked out at range.
Top counter-picks
- Pichu / Pikachu (“the rats”): Small hitboxes make Cloud’s sword swings whiff constantly, while their own speed and combo game punishes any opening hard.
- Inkling: High mobility and strong burst-range options let Inkling dodge in and out of Cloud’s disjointed range without committing to a bad trade.
- Squirtle / Sonic: Both lean on pure speed and small frames to stay outside Cloud’s most dangerous hitboxes while poking away at his percent.
- Joker: Strong disjoint of his own plus counter-oriented tools (Arsene, his own counter move) neutralize Cloud’s approach options directly.
- Min Min: Her long-range Arm attacks out-space Cloud entirely, forcing him to approach into a bad matchup.
- Palutena / other zoners: Keeping Cloud locked out at range denies him the safe openings he needs to charge his Limit meter, which is central to neutralizing his biggest threat.

- Respect his disjoint, but don’t run forever. Characters with small hitboxes or high mobility should still look for openings; pure evasion lets Cloud passively build his meter back up.
- Punish Cross Slash (side-B) on whiff or block. It’s committal and highly punishable if you read it coming, which is one of the most reliable ways to swing a Cloud matchup in your favor.
