Buying tips
- Two different measurements, two different meters: the 6.5 family reads UV Index (what the animal receives), the 6.2 family reads broadband UVB output (whether the lamp is still performing). Buy the 6.5R if you can only buy one.
- The Zoo Med ST-7 and ST-6 are rebadged Solarmeter 6.5 and 6.2 units – identical instruments, so buy whichever is cheaper or in stock rather than treating them as competing products.
- A meter’s real job is tracking bulb decay over time, not a one-off check at purchase. Most UVB lamps lose significant output long before they visibly dim.
