The SIG Sauer P320 XCompact needs an exact-configuration fit check, not a generic P320 label. SIG’s X-Series material identifies the original XCompact as using an XCompact grip module and a subcompact-length slide with a 3.6-inch barrel; published specifications give it a 7.0-inch overall length, 5.3-inch height, and 1.3-inch width. Those dimensions differ from the XCarry, which uses a longer 3.9-inch Compact-length slide and a taller grip. They also differ from standard P320 Compact and Carry configurations. The P320 system is modular, which makes careful identification more important, not less.
Grip module, slide, and configuration
Identify the grip module, slide length, barrel, sights, optic cut, manual-safety configuration if present, and every installed accessory. “XCompact” can refer to a factory configuration, while a modular P320 can be assembled from components whose names do not describe the final physical shape. A Compact slide on an XCarry grip, or a different slide on an XCompact grip, changes the length and height that a shell must accommodate. A P320 Compact, Carry, XCarry, and XCompact should not be treated as identical merely because they share a family name or a fire-control-unit concept.
The trigger guard and dust-cover area are especially important. The XCompact’s grip module shape, undercut, beavertail, and contoured magwell can differ from another P320 grip. A device mounted to the rail, an extended control, a gas pedal or thumb-rest attachment, a threaded barrel, compensator, altered sights, or extended magazine changes clearance or leverage. A shell molded for an unmodified pistol may interfere with one of these additions. Do not force the unloaded pistol into a tight shell or assume a “P320 Compact” description includes every X-series combination. Confirm stated compatibility for the actual assembled firearm.
Optics and clearance
Many XCompact versions are optic ready, but optic readiness does not mean every optic-equipped configuration has the same outside profile. The mounting interface, cover plate, installed optic body, rear-sight arrangement, screw heads, and tall replacement sights can affect clearance near the top rear of a shell. An optic-compatible design needs room for the installed optic without pressing it, loosening it, or making the draw inconsistent. Check clearance only with the firearm unloaded. There should be no contact that changes retention, prevents full seating, or causes the optic, sights, or controls to scrape during a controlled draw and return.
IWB retention and attachment
Inside-the-waistband placement is not a safety mechanism. Ride height, angle, belt support, clothing, body shape, and location near the hip or abdomen determine stability and access. Evaluate routine actions such as sitting, driving, bending, reaching, and restroom use with an unloaded firearm in a controlled setting. A position that rotates, loosens, exposes the trigger area, or prevents controlled handling is unsuitable. The belt, clips, loops, screws, and stitching are part of the retention system; inspect them for cracks, looseness, bent hardware, and wear.
Retention means the firearm stays seated through normal movement while a trained lawful user can make a deliberate draw. Passive retention derives from the shaped shell and tension; active retention adds a deliberate release. Neither works safely with incorrect fit. If adjustment is available, follow its directions and test only unloaded. Avoid settings that distort material, press a control, or require an unpredictable draw. The unloaded XCompact should seat without force, remain stable during ordinary movement, and draw and return without contact with the optic, controls, or attachments.
Trigger protection and materials
The trigger guard must be completely covered and protected from intrusion. The shell should not flex into that area or leave room for clothing, cords, keys, or a collapsed edge to enter. Rigid thermoplastic generally retains an open mouth; leather and fabric may be comfortable but require inspection for softening, stretching, curling, damaged stitching, and collapse. A material label is not proof of safety. The useful check is whether the empty opening remains stable, the unloaded firearm is fully seated with the trigger guard covered, and attachment and retention remain consistent after normal movement.
Clear clothing completely before reholstering. Shirt tails, jacket lining, drawstrings, and belt edges can enter the opening. Keep the trigger finger indexed outside the guard, control the muzzle, and where safe visually check the opening. Reholstering is not a speed task: never press the pistol past resistance. If the shell has collapsed or the opening cannot be safely accessed, remove the unloaded holster from the body before resolving the issue.
Training, storage, and legal context
Follow the manual for the exact P320 configuration. Keep the muzzle in a safe direction, treat the firearm as loaded until personally verified otherwise, keep the finger off the trigger until a lawful shot is intended, and know the target and what is beyond it. Mechanical features and modularity do not replace those rules. Seek qualified instruction for loading, unloading, drawing, movement, and reholstering. Practice first with an unloaded, cleared firearm in an area without live ammunition, then follow range rules for live fire.
A holster is not a storage device. When the P320 is not under the direct control of an authorized user, secure it against unauthorized access. Licensing, prohibited places, reciprocity, property rules, vehicle transport, notice duties, and storage requirements vary by state and locality and can change. Confirm current rules for every place where you live, travel, or enter private property, and obtain qualified local advice when uncertain. Exact grip, slide, optic, and accessory identification; full trigger coverage; stable attachment; and deliberate safe handling are the meaningful checks for an XCompact configuration.
