Heirlooms level up with your character and give a flat experience bonus on top of scaling stats, so the goal when gearing a leveling Shadow Priest is maximizing Intellect and useful secondary stats rather than chasing endgame BiS logic.
Priority stats while leveling
Intellect is your primary stat and should be the first thing you look for on any heirloom slot. After that, Haste is the standout secondary — it speeds up your cast-time damage-over-time application and general kill speed, which matters more while leveling than pure stat-stacking does. Stamina rounds things out for survivability when you’re pulling multiple mobs.
Recommended heirloom pieces
- Chest and Shoulders: the caster/healer PvE heirloom set (robe + int/haste shoulder enchant) covers your two biggest slots and is the standard pick for a leveling priest of either spec.
- Weapon: the caster heirloom staff or wand — spell power scales your damage more than melee stats ever would.
- Trinket: an Intellect-based heirloom trinket if available for your expansion; it’s a straightforward damage/mana boost.
- Cloak: a guild or reputation heirloom cloak with Intellect, if you have one unlocked — free stats for a slot that’s otherwise easy to neglect while leveling.
Spirit isn’t a priority
Unlike a healing-focused leveling spec, Shadow doesn’t need Spirit on its gear. Between self-healing tools, mana potions, and normal downtime between pulls, mana sustain isn’t the bottleneck — spend your itemization on Intellect and Haste instead.
Bottom line
Gear a leveling Shadow Priest around Intellect first, Haste second, and don’t worry about Spirit. The PvE caster heirloom set (robe, shoulders, staff/wand, trinket) covers the slots that matter most and will carry you efficiently from your starting zone to max level.
