Best Grass Type Pokemon White

Grass types in Pokemon White (Gen 5, the Unova region) range from a great starter to some genuinely strong defensive and special attackers. Here are the best Grass-type Pokemon you can use in Pokemon White, and how to get the most from them.

Best starter line: Serperior

If you pick Snivy, its final form Serperior is an excellent Grass type and a staple of strong White teams. It has great Speed and solid defenses, and the move Coil (boosting Attack, Defense, and accuracy) lets it set up and sweep. A reliable, well-rounded backbone for any team.

Best defensive wall: Ferrothorn

Ferrothorn (from Ferroseed) is one of the best Grass types in the game thanks to its Grass/Steel typing and enormous defenses. It can set Stealth Rock, Spikes, Toxic Spikes, and Leech Seed, making it an incredible defensive pivot and entry-hazard setter. Its one big weakness is Fire, so keep it away from flames.

Best special sweeper: Lilligant (note: trade required)

Lilligant has high Special Attack and the Chlorophyll ability, making it a fantastic sun sweeper with Petal Dance (paired with Own Tempo to avoid confusion). Important for White players: Lilligant comes from Petilil, which is Black-exclusive — in White you’ll get Cottonee instead, so you’ll need to trade to add Lilligant.

White’s version-exclusive option: Whimsicott

In White you can catch Cottonee (Black gets Petilil), which evolves into Whimsicott. With the Prankster ability, Whimsicott is a brilliant support Pokemon — priority Leech Seed, Stun Spore, Tailwind, and Taunt make it a disruptive team player.

Other strong picks

  • Leavanny (from Sewaddle) — Grass/Bug with good Attack and Swarm; a solid physical attacker available early.
  • Sawsbuck (from Deerling) — Grass/Normal with Sap Sipper and a strong Horn Leech for reliable physical offense and healing.
  • Amoonguss (from Foongus) — a bulky Grass/Poison spore-spreader great for status and stalling.
  • Virizion — the Grass/Fighting legendary; high Speed and Special Defense with great coverage.

How to choose

  • Want one great all-rounder: pick Snivy and ride Serperior the whole game.
  • Need a defensive anchor: Ferrothorn (watch for Fire).
  • Want offense: trade for Lilligant (special) or use Sawsbuck/Leavanny (physical).
  • Team support: Whimsicott, your White-exclusive pick.
  • Grass is weak to Fire, Flying, Ice, Bug, and Poison — pair these with good coverage and don’t lean on a mono-Grass team.
