What a bullet mold actually is
A bullet mold is a reusable, precision-machined block (usually two hinged halves) that casts lead or lead-alloy bullets to a specific weight and profile when you pour molten alloy into its cavity. For .45-70, molds are sold in single-, double-, and multi-cavity versions, and in common weights of roughly 300, 330, 350, 405, and 500 grains, in both plain-base and gas-checked designs.
Material: iron vs. aluminum
Mold blocks are typically cast iron/steel or aluminum. Aluminum molds heat up faster and are lighter to handle over a long casting session; iron/steel molds hold heat more evenly once they’re up to temperature and tend to be favored for very long runs. Neither is objectively “better” — it’s a tradeoff between quick warm-up and thermal stability.
Alloy and hardness
The lead alloy you cast with matters as much as the mold itself. Pure lead (roughly BHN 5) is soft and easy to size but can lead a barrel at higher velocities; a 1:20 tin-to-lead blend (roughly BHN 8-9) is a common middle ground for standard .45-70 loads; harder alloys like Linotype (BHN ~22) are typically reserved for higher-pressure loads where you need the bullet to hold its shape under more stress. Match your alloy to the load you’re actually building, not the other way around.
Prepping and running a mold
- New mold blocks are typically “smoked” first — carbon-coating the cavity (often with a match flame) so hot alloy releases cleanly instead of sticking.
- The mold needs to reach a genuinely hot working temperature before castings come out consistent; expect the first several pours to be rejects that go straight back in the pot while the mold heats up.
- After casting, bullets still need to be sized and lubed in a separate sizing die before they’re ready to load — the mold only gets you to a rough, oversized casting.
Safety
Casting lead alloy involves molten metal at 600-750°F and lead fume/dust exposure. Work in a well-ventilated area (ideally outdoors or with active fume extraction), wear eye protection and heat-resistant gloves, keep any moisture away from the molten pot (water in molten lead causes violent spattering), and wash hands thoroughly after handling lead alloy or finished castings. If you’re new to casting, look for guidance from an experienced caster or a reloading-specific safety course before running your first batch.
