A P320 Compact must be identified by its actual assembled configuration before its fit can be assessed. SIG Sauer’s published data for the standard P320 Compact lists a 3.9-inch barrel and 7.2-inch overall length; its Compact grip is shorter in height than the Carry grip. The similarly named P320 Carry uses the same 3.9-inch Compact-length slide but a taller Carry grip. The XCompact uses a shorter 3.6-inch slide with an XCompact grip, while the XCarry uses a 3.9-inch slide with an XCarry grip. These names are not interchangeable fit descriptions.
Modularity makes verification essential
The P320’s modular design means a pistol may have a factory configuration or a combination of a fire-control unit, grip module, slide, barrel, sights, and accessories that changes its external shape. Read the model information, then inspect the actual unloaded pistol. Determine the grip module, slide and barrel length, manual-safety configuration if present, sight profile, optic cut, and every fitted accessory. A Compact slide on a Carry grip has the same muzzle-end length as a Compact but a different grip height. An X-series module has different contours from a standard module. A broad “P320 Compact/Carry” label cannot settle fit for a modified or mixed configuration.
Inspect the trigger guard, dust cover, rail, beavertail, magwell, slide, sights, and controls. Mounted lights or lasers, a gas pedal or thumb-rest device, altered sights, a threaded barrel, compensator, extended magazine, or optic can require clearance not present in a shell molded for a bare standard Compact. Do not force the unloaded pistol into a doubtful shell. It should fully seat without pressure, remain stable, draw cleanly, and return without scraping a sight, pressing a control, or contacting an accessory. Confirm fit for the actual assembled firearm rather than assuming component names prove compatibility.
IWB placement, attachment, and retention
Inside-the-waistband placement is not a safety feature. Ride height, angle, belt support, clothing, body shape, and position near the hip or abdomen determine stability and access. A setup can feel secure while standing and shift while seated, driving, bending, reaching, or using a restroom. Evaluate those movements with the firearm unloaded in a controlled setting. Discontinue a position that rotates, loosens, exposes the trigger area, or prevents controlled muzzle direction and reholstering.
Retention means the pistol stays seated during ordinary activity while a trained lawful user can make a deliberate draw. Passive retention is created by the shaped shell and tension; active retention adds a separate deliberate release. Both require exact fit. Any adjustment should be made as instructed and tested only with the unloaded firearm. Avoid settings that deform material, contact controls, or require an unpredictable draw. The belt, clips, loops, screws, and stitching are retention components too. Inspect them regularly for looseness, cracks, bent hardware, damaged stitching, or a belt that permits the shell to drift or come out with the pistol.
Materials, optics, and trigger coverage
Complete trigger-guard coverage is essential. The shell must stay firm enough that fabric, cords, keys, or a collapsed edge cannot enter the trigger area. Rigid thermoplastic commonly keeps an open mouth; leather or fabric may be comfortable but require inspection for softening, stretching, curling, worn stitching, and collapse. The material label is not proof of safety. With the unloaded pistol removed, the opening should remain stable; with it inserted, the trigger guard should be fully protected and retention should remain consistent through ordinary movement.
Optic-ready slides require a separate clearance check. The cover plate, installed optic, mounting screws, and changed rear-sight profile may extend into a space that a non-optic shell does not clear. Check that nothing touches the optic or sights, changes retention, or prevents full seating. Clear clothing before reholstering: shirt tails, jacket lining, waist cords, and belt edges can enter the opening. Keep the trigger finger indexed outside the guard, control the muzzle, and never press the pistol past resistance. If a flexible shell collapses, remove the unloaded holster from the body before resolving it.
Handling, training, storage, and legal limits
Follow the manual for the exact P320 configuration. Keep the muzzle in a safe direction, treat the firearm as loaded until personally verified otherwise, keep the finger off the trigger until a lawful shot is intended, and know the target and what is beyond it. Mechanical features do not replace disciplined handling. Seek qualified instruction for loading, unloading, drawing, movement, and reholstering. Begin practice with an unloaded and cleared firearm in a dedicated area without live ammunition, then follow range rules for live fire.
A holster is not a storage device. When the pistol is not under an authorized user’s direct control, secure it against unauthorized access. Licensing, prohibited locations, reciprocity, property rules, vehicle transport, notice duties, and storage requirements vary by jurisdiction and change. Verify current rules where you live and travel and obtain qualified local advice when uncertain. Exact slide, grip module, optic, and accessory identification; complete trigger coverage; sound attachment; and deliberate safe handling are the relevant Compact checks.
