Best Defensive Clan Castle Troops

The Clan Castle is the one building in Clash of Clans that punches above its weight on defense: a single well-chosen troop parked inside it can turn an attacker’s guaranteed three-star into a one-star failure. Because the meta shifts with every balance update, the “best” defensive Clan Castle troop isn’t fixed — it depends on your Town Hall level, what your clanmates can donate, and which troop types are strong after the latest patch. Here’s how to think about defensive Clan Castle troops going into the second half of 2026.

Why the Clan Castle matters so much on defense

Clan Castle troops don’t just add extra hit points to a base — they spring out mid-attack, often catching an attacker’s army out of position or forcing them to burn spells they’d planned to save for later phases of the attack. A good CC troop buys time for the rest of your defenses (splash-damage buildings, X-Bows, Inferno Towers) to finish the job. A bad or absent one is often the single biggest reason an otherwise solid base takes a clean three-star.

Super Minion: the default pick at nearly every Town Hall

Super Minions have been a staple defensive donation for several seasons running. They sit back from your defenses, snipe attackers from range before melee troops can reach them, and chew through heroes quickly. If your Clan Castle capacity allows even a couple of Super Minions, they’re rarely a wrong choice regardless of what the rest of your base looks like.

Ice Golem + Witch + Headhunter: the layered combo for high Town Halls

At higher Town Halls, a mixed Clan Castle does more work than a single strong troop. A common high-level defensive combo pairs an Ice Golem (to tank and slow incoming troops), a Witch (to keep skeletons in the fight as distraction and chip damage), and a Headhunter (to snipe the attacker’s heroes directly). Together they cover tanking, distraction, and hero-hunting in one package, which is hard for an attacker to plan around blind.

Super Miners for punishing tight entry points

Bases that funnel attackers through narrow entrances benefit from Super Miners in the Clan Castle: they deal heavy splash damage when they go down, which is brutal against ground-troop-heavy attacks and can stall out thrower-based armies trying to force a clean entry.

Watch the balance patches

Clash of Clans’ meta moves with each update — recent 2026 balance changes have buffed the Druid and strengthened Super Witch, while nerfing the Meteor Golem, which shifted defensive CC picks away from pure brute-force tanks toward the more layered combos above. Whatever you donate, re-check it after every major balance patch instead of assuming last season’s pick is still the strongest option.

Donation basics worth remembering

Clanmates can donate up to six troops per Clan Castle request by default (more with the Donation Limit clan perk), and any troop, spell, or siege machine you’ve personally unlocked can be donated as long as the recipient’s Clan Castle level supports it. Coordinate with your clanmates on what to keep parked in your Castle for defense versus what to request fresh before you attack — the two use cases often call for different troops.
