- Recoil durability first. A 12-gauge semi-auto generates real, repeated recoil, so the single most important spec is a housing genuinely tested and rated for shotgun-level abuse — not just rifle-rated durability.
- Enclosed emitter designs resist fouling from unburned powder and debris kicked back during rapid fire, which is a bigger issue on a shotgun than on most rifles.
- Red dot vs. holographic. Compact red dots (like the Trijicon RMR or Aimpoint Micro series) prioritize a small footprint and long battery life; holographic sights (like the EOTech EXPS series) trade some size and battery life for very fast target acquisition in close quarters.
- Mounting height matters. Most M4 owners need a riser or low-profile mount to get a proper cheek weld with the stock’s comb height — check compatibility before buying an optic, not after.
