The Aspire Breeze 2 is an all-in-one pod device — the sequel to the original Breeze, with a 1000 mAh battery, a pod section holding up to 3 ml, adjustable airflow, bottom filling with a rubber stopper, and single-button operation. It is aimed squarely at people moving away from cigarettes for the first time, which is exactly why the liquid question matters more on this device than on a larger, more forgiving one. Choosing badly produces two very specific and very common complaints: the device stops drawing properly, or the coil tastes burnt within days. Both are liquid problems, not device faults.
The VG/PG ratio is the decision that matters most
E-liquid is built on two carrier fluids. VG (vegetable glycerine) is thick and syrupy, produces dense vapour, and mutes flavour slightly. PG (propylene glycol) is thin and watery, carries flavour better, and produces the sharper sensation at the back of the throat that many former smokers are looking for.
The Breeze 2 uses small coils fed by narrow wicking ports. That geometry cannot draw thick liquid quickly enough. A high-VG liquid — the 70/30 or 80/20 blends sold for large sub-ohm tanks — will sit in the pod without reaching the wick fast enough, and the result is the dry, acrid taste of a coil firing on a partly dry wick. Once that happens the coil is finished; you cannot recover it by refilling.
For a device of this type the sensible range is roughly 50/50 to 60/40 VG/PG. Anything thicker is asking the wick to do something it was not designed to do.
Nicotine salts versus freebase
The second decision is the form the nicotine takes.
Freebase nicotine is the traditional form. It is harsh at high strengths, so it is normally sold at lower concentrations and used in devices that produce a lot of vapour to compensate.
Nicotine salts are nicotine combined with an acid, which lowers the pH and makes higher strengths tolerable to inhale. They absorb faster and hit more like a cigarette, which is why compact pod devices and salts arrived together as a category. The Breeze 2 is explicitly described as a compact nicotine salt device, and salts are what it is designed around.
The practical consequence is about strength. A salt liquid at a high concentration in a device that produces this much vapour is an unpleasant and unnecessary dose. Heavier former smokers typically use a mid-range salt strength; lighter ones go lower. Starting too high is the second most common reason people abandon a device like this — not because it failed, but because the experience was unpleasant.
Coil resistance changes the answer
The Breeze 2 takes more than one coil option, and the resistance you fit changes which liquid suits it.
- Higher-resistance coils (the tighter, mouth-to-lung options) produce less vapour, use less liquid, and pair with higher nicotine strengths. This is the configuration that most resembles smoking a cigarette, and it is what most people switching over should start with.
- Lower-resistance coils produce more vapour and more flavour, consume liquid faster, and need a lower nicotine strength to compensate — the same strength that was comfortable on a higher-resistance coil will be harsh here.
Pair the airflow setting with the coil as well. The adjustable airflow is one of the genuine improvements of the Breeze 2 over the original: closed down, it gives a tight cigarette-like draw suited to higher-resistance coils; opened up, it gives a looser airier draw suited to lower ones.
Flavour types that cause problems
Two categories cause disproportionate trouble in small pod devices, regardless of the VG/PG ratio.
Heavily sweetened liquids — dessert, custard and candy profiles — contain sucralose, which caramelises on the coil and builds a dark crust. This is what people mean by a coil “gunking up”. It kills flavour long before the coil actually fails, and on a small coil it happens fast.
Dark tobacco and heavy cream profiles behave similarly. If you like these, expect to change coils considerably more often than someone vaping a light fruit or menthol, and treat that as the cost of the flavour rather than a fault.
Filling and priming
The Breeze 2 fills from the bottom, through a port sealed by a rubber stopper. Two habits prevent most early coil failures:
- Prime a new coil. Put a few drops of liquid directly onto the exposed wicking material before you assemble the pod, then fill and leave it standing for several minutes. A dry wick fired even once is a burnt coil.
- Do not run the pod dry. Refill when the level gets low rather than when it runs out. Firing the device on the last of the liquid is the fastest way to ruin a coil that was otherwise fine.
What to do if it tastes burnt
Work through it in order. Was the coil primed and rested? Is the liquid thicker than roughly 60% VG? Has the pod been run low or dry? Is the liquid a heavy sweetened dessert flavour? Almost every burnt-taste complaint on this device resolves to one of those four, and none of them is fixed by buying a different device.
