What a Case Neck Thickness Gauge Actually Measures

On a precision reloading bench, neck wall thickness is one of the last variables people get around to controlling, and one of the few that shows up directly on target. A cartridge case neck that is thicker on one side than the other grips the bullet unevenly. That uneven tension releases unevenly, and the result is vertical stringing and groups that will not shrink no matter how carefully you weigh powder.

A neck thickness gauge measures the wall of the case neck itself — not the outside diameter, which a caliper already gives you, but the thickness of the brass on each side. Good tools resolve to 0.0001", because the differences that matter are genuinely that small: a 0.002" variation around a neck is enough to be worth correcting on a match rifle and completely irrelevant on a plinking load.

How These Tools Differ

There are three broad designs, and they are not interchangeable:

  • Ball micrometers — a standard micrometer frame with a rounded anvil that reaches inside the neck. Slow, but the most direct and repeatable reading. Available in both vernier and digital forms.
  • Dial or digital gauges on a spindle — the case rotates on a mandrel while an indicator rides the outside of the neck. Much faster for sorting a large batch, and the one to buy if you are checking hundreds of cases.
  • Combination concentricity tools — measure neck wall thickness plus runout of the loaded round. More versatile, but each individual measurement is usually a little less precise than a dedicated instrument.

Redding, RCBS, Hornady, Forster and Sinclair International all make tools in this space, and any of them will do the job. The choice is mostly about which design fits your workflow rather than which brand is better.

Reading the Measurement

Measure at three or four points around the neck, not once. A single reading tells you the thickness at one spot and nothing about whether the neck is uniform, which is the entire point. Record the highest and lowest values; the difference between them is your neck runout.

Some rough guidance on what the numbers mean:

  • Under about 0.001" variation — good brass. Neck turning will not gain you anything measurable.
  • Around 0.002" — typical of ordinary factory brass. Worth sorting into batches if you shoot competitively, but not a defect.
  • Over about 0.003" — this is where neck turning starts to be worth the considerable effort, assuming your rifle and your shooting are consistent enough to show the difference.

Measure Before You Decide to Turn

The most common mistake is buying a neck turner first and a gauge second. Neck turning removes brass permanently and takes a long time per case. Measuring first tells you whether your brass actually needs it — and with good-quality brass from a single lot, quite often it does not. The gauge is the cheaper tool and the one that tells you whether the expensive, time-consuming step is justified at all.

It is also worth measuring a sample of every new lot of brass you buy. Neck thickness consistency varies more between manufacturers and between lots than it does within a single good lot, so a ten-case sample will usually tell you what you are dealing with.

Practical Notes

  • Clean the necks first. Carbon fouling inside the neck is thick enough to corrupt a 0.0001" measurement.
  • Measure fired brass, sized brass, or both — but be consistent. Sizing changes neck dimensions, so comparing a fired case against a sized one tells you nothing useful.
  • Let the brass and the tool reach the same temperature. At these tolerances, a case straight from a warm tumbler will read differently than a cool one.
  • Check the tool against a known standard periodically. Most of these ship with a setting gauge or reference; digital units in particular drift.
  • Sorting beats turning for most shooters. Grouping cases into batches of similar neck thickness gets you much of the consistency benefit for none of the risk of removing too much brass.
